A couple of years ago she had an accident with barb-wire, she healed completely, yet she still has a little stiffness in the leg (left-hind leg). I have a barrelracer, that is a full-blooded American Quarter horse mare. She is 10 years old at 15 h.h. A couple of years ago she had an accident with barb-wire, she healed completely, yet she still has a little stiffness in the leg (left-hind leg). It also left a proud scar that makes the leg appear slightly bigger than the other three. The vet that treated her said she was ok to do everything a normal horse would do, but im still concerned and the last thing I want to do is endanger her. I still barrel race her once a month or so in competitions. I have recently started teaching her english and jumping. My question is, will it hurt her in any way to be jumping even though she has shown no signs of pain or discomfort. If not, what would be a proper height limit? If you could give me an answer as quickly as possible it would be greatly appreciated!

Once or twice since I have started actually pushing her, she has come home a little sore in what seems to be her right hind stifle/hip area but recovers after a day or two of rest. I have a 7 year old off the track quarter horse mare. I bought her back in October of last year and have recently starting running some local shows and jackpots. Once or twice since I have started actually pushing her, she has come home a little sore in what seems to be her right hind stifle/hip area but recovers after a day or two of rest. We ran a show almost 2 Saturday's ago, and she stumbled a little bit on our sprint home. She came out of the pen "off" and has not been right since. I will be hauling her to my vet if it doesn't get better after this weekend (2 week point). My question is, what do you recommend as far as "preventative" medicines or suppliments to prolong their years of compitition? I know there are injections, suppliments, and other things people do to help keep their horses running comfortably through the years. With this being my 4th horse due to having to retire my others after being diagnosed with DJD, DSLD, and a suspensory injury (which I asked you about in April 2007), I want this mare to last me more than a year! I use SMB Elite medicine boots on all 4 legs, do good warm ups before our runs, and feed quality feed and hay. Any info or suggestions would be great, as I am ready to throw in the towel on my high maintenance horses! Thanks!

Connecting to your horse's mind! COMMUNICANTION through CUES, not bits or force. Building a proper relationship with your horse should always come before competition. Don't let competition come before your relationship that you have built as the leader of your herd. It's based on trust, respect and communication through cues, and it should never be 2nd to anything else you do with or to your horse. You should never train your horse or use a technique that you would be embarrassed to have someone see you do.
